I decided not to get messy and gut my pumpkins this year. We actually used a very similar idea for our wedding table numbers. It took much more time, patient {awesome} friends who committed their time and creative selves to cutting wood blocks, drilling holes in the shape of numbers, then we hand-sewed through the numbers with thread.
This pumpkin thread art was done strictly with spray paint {optional}, nails and thread.
I had some chalkboard spray paint that I used for my black one. This would be a super fun alternative for small children...without the nails of course...
